To review the history of Verus Bank, it’s helpful to first understand the background and nature of its ownership. Richard Chase, Past Senior Advisor, was born and raised on a ranch/farm in Northwest Butler County. A quiet-natured individual, he completed his college studies with honors, served as an intelligence officer in the United States Air Force, then returned to the home place to raise a family and continue the rich tradition of farming and running cattle. Through local friendships, he helped start and manage a very successful commercial cattle feedlot. This experience increased his exposure to banking and finance. It was from this, that his interest in banking was sparked and he subsequently spent two years studying and researching the industry. Then, in the early 1970’s, with a small group of investors, he helped charter a bank in northeast Wichita. Ironically, that very same year (1974), Verus Bank was chartered as First National Bank of Derby.
In 1983, the Chase Family had the opportunity to purchase an interest in a struggling First National Bank of Derby and with the purchase, assumed its leadership role. Three years later, construction was completed on its new main banking facility at 1033 N. Buckner, Derby, Kansas which signaled a new commitment level to the community and a clear vision on becoming the local financial leader.
In 1995, the bank expanded its reach by branching into El Dorado, Kansas. And in 2004, it expanded once again by opening an office in Augusta, Kansas. Through its expansion, the bank changed its name to Verus Bank to claim its own identity and define its brand.
In 2008, the new Rock Road location was completed and in 2010, Verus Bank opened a full service bank in the Derby High School, taking a proactive stance on financial literacy.
Today, Verus Bank is vibrant; embracing technology and always looking for ways to enhance the customer experience. The bank is managed by an Executive Team who has been together for more than 15 years and has spent enough time around Richard Chase to have a full understanding of what true and genuine can be. Planted in Kansas soil, and nurtured with the hands of a farmer, Verus Bank continues to flourish.
